One of the things I love about my job is getting together with interesting people. Or simply getting out and doing interesting things. This weekend I got to do both when I took pictures for Chris Kirsch.
Chris is a master quilter who stitches magic from her quaint log cabin deep in the woods of southeastern Wisconsin. With 24 years of experience, she crafts award-winning quilts, guides quilting tours abroad, teaches classes throughout the United States and has authored two books.
And because she needs a new website, we’re taking pictures of her stunningly beautiful quilts!
Not only does Chris have beautiful quilts, she also has interesting props. I love the contrast of textures—rock, wood and fiber.
It’s home sweet home for Chris. Here’s her log cabin in the woods.
Her dog Annabelle is such a sweetheart. And very active. Between her zooming around the yard and her shiny, black coat, getting her picture required good light and quick reflexes.

Chris, pictured above, says she loves going out on the pond early in the morning with a cup of coffee and her Bible. How special to study God’s word amongst the beauty of his creation.
I love how the fringe gives this quilt a Bohemic look. And look at the beaded details. I think this one is my favorite.
Or maybe this one is.
Oh, I can’t decide. They’re all so beautiful, aren’t they?

Beautiful! Is the close-up quilt (the one above the dog’s picture) hand-stitched? All of them must have taken lots of time and talent!
Ann, I think it is hand-stitched. It looks like it, doesn’t it? But I’ll have to ask.
My favorite is the one draped over the branch with the stack of wood behind it (you really should have numbered these). I like the boldness of the colors. And because I have wood like that sitting in my yard, lol.

I’m blown away by your photography. You took my quilts to another level :-). The answer to the question is that the stitching on the detail shot above Annabelle’s picture is done by machine. The technique is called “free motion”. To do it the feed dogs on the machine are dropped and I just doodle with my sewing machine in bright colored thread. It’s a lot of fun and quite addictive.
